A modern alternative to SparkNotes and CliffsNotes, SuperSummary offers high-quality Study Guides with detailed chapter summaries and analysis of major themes, characters, and more. For select classroom titles, we also provide Teaching Guides with discussion and quiz questions to prompt student engagement.

Discussion/Analysis Prompt

Describe the connection between the novel’s themes of The Power of Creating and The Importance of Choice. For example, you might consider these ideas: When are Lolly and Vega forced to make difficult choices in the novel, and what are the repercussions of their choices? In what ways must Vega and Lolly sacrifice something to make the right choice? Why might it be more difficult for them to make good choices without their creativity? How does creativity aid in helping Vega and Lolly to cope with their surroundings?

Teaching Suggestion: Students may find it beneficial to brainstorm potential answers before responding to the question aloud. Consider providing reflection time as you relay each question for students to jot down thoughts and make connections between the two themes.

Differentiation Suggestion: Students who might benefit from a more focused approach may use a T-chart headed with each theme. Before reviewing the questions in the prompt, they might brainstorm characters, moments, and scenes that relate to each theme, then consider how the items in each column might connect by drawing arrows, lines, or thought bubbles. This visual tool might serve as an extra aid in small-group discussions or individual writing time to the prompt.
