Elise, a little girl from the group of children Juliette discovered, measures the number of steps from which the flood has receded following Juliette’s fix of the pump. Solo reaches for his radio to tell Juliette the news: “I think everything’s going to be just fine” (509).
The Epilogue is an optimistic ending that foretells two big departures from the silos’ traditional way of operating. First, the communicational barrier between silos is broken down as Solo continues to communicate with Juliette via radio. Also, with the flood waters receding, it seems likely that Juliette’s plan of digging underneath the silos to connect them may become a reality. This way, she may be able to save Solo and the children from their isolation and rehabilitate the dead silo. The Epilogue, which also reveals that Juliette’s repairs of the pump were successful, implies that Juliette’s belief in truth, transparency, and breaking old rules will work out well.
